25th Reunion of the USS Whitehurst
1950-1951 Crews
When ReU-2010 finished up, no host
had been selected. Rather it was agreed that former hosts Jake &
Annie Houser would contact Zeke Frazier and ask him to make
arrangements for the 2011 reunion in San Diego. Then Jake and
Annie would be advisors and Max Crow would serve a Communications
Coordinator. It worked out pretty well for all of us except
Zeke, who did all the work. And he did it very well. He
lined up a hotel with the perfect location and activities within
walking distance. The lower activities costs and lack of
transportation costs
Whitehurst Memorial Bell and Stand, built by
Whitehurst Assn. Yeoman, Max Crow and decorated with Glen Anderson's
great photo of the ship in full dress on the occasion of the crowning
of Queen Elizabeth of Gr. Britain, June of 1953. The lower
picture contains icons of the ship's call signal and Campaign Ribbons.
It is our intention to carry or ship this bell to each reunion for use
in each year's Taps Ceremony.

more than offset the somewhat higher hotel costs. He also
arranged for the Weather Prophets to call in ideal weather. He
and Maggie, secured, stocked, filled "Goodie Bags", and decorated a
perfect Hospitality Room, located between the hotel and a little deli
which served our breakfasts in a
"Side Walk Cafe" setting.
The highlights of our schedule were:
Sunday Sept. 11 Check in and register with Fellowship, sea
stories etc.
Monday Sept. 12 Breakfast, fellowship and Tour the Midway
CVB-41. Lunch onboard at
The Fantail Cafe. Later, Men's Business meeting. Selected
Jim Howe as 2012 Host for ReU in Washington, DC area around
mid-October.
Tuesday Sept. 13 Breakfast with more sea stories etc then the San
Diego Harbor Tour on the Hornblower Tour Boat, followed by a visit to
the Maritime Museum, a collection of Wind Jammers and various other
watercraft including a Russian Submarine.
Tuesday evening was reserved for the closing banquet, a Taps Ceremony
inaugurating our newly acquired "Memorial Bell" QMCM Al Crawford
struck the bell as Max Crow read the names of the most recently
departed shipmates. After the closing ceremony, we took our
final photos and said many good byes.
Literally hundreds of photos were made by several
"photographers" during our short time in San Diego. Almost all
of the pictures were used in the 49 minute, 2011-ReU DVD produced by
your friendly yeoman, and distributed to all attendees. I can't
post them all here but will post pictures of all who attended this
reunion.
